Matt,
Gotta ask? Why do you want to replace the modem? If the goal is to save money, then you're spending money unnecessarily. Cablevision doesn't charge you a rental fee for the modem.
If you don't like the WiFi provided by the modem, then turn off the WIFI features, buy a standard wireless router and use it as a wireless access point. Let the cablevision modem do the routing and the router provide just WiFi.
Or, turn off both wifi and routing on the cablevision modem and use it just as a modem. Let the wireless router perform the routing and create the wireless network.

I'm moving shortly so i'm working with an incomplete set of details. That makes this very simple.
....sounds like the "DOCSIS standard" is yet another reason to hate cable companies.

Matt,
If you need more info such as if Cablevision rents models and such, just give them a call. They'll give you all the details. If you need technical info, call and speak to the tech support. In my experience, they're actually pretty good when it comes to the basics. A deeper issue and you need to push through the ranks to a senior tech or a more knowledgeable tech. I'm surprised you didn't contact them about this stuff prior to posting in the forum.

Cable companies are evil. It is in their nature as near-monopolies.

I wanted to understand how the DOCSIS standard works and i have very low optimism regarding info from cable company tech support.
