iTunes, aaghhh
#11
Both AA and btfc are suggesting a switch to list view in the movie sync pane but I do not see any way to do this. If it is possible I'll jump up and down with happiness. Could you guys explain how you do this? I've been poking at itunes and Google but I can't see how.

"switch to list view in the movie sync pane"

Not in the movie sync pane, in "Movies" under "Library" on the sidebar of the main iTunes window.

From iTunes help:

Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad

You can set up your iPod, iPhone, or iPad for automatic or manual syncing.

Automatic syncing: Sync your entire iTunes library or choose specific items to sync. Whenever you connect your device, iTunes updates it automatically to match any changes made to your library since the last sync. You can automatically sync a device with only one iTunes library at a time.

Manual syncing: Drag items to your device individually.

Select the Sync checkbox, and select the items you want to sync automatically each time you connect your device.

Tip: To make sure certain items are never synced, deselect their checkboxes in your iTunes library, and select “Sync only checked items” in the Summary pane.

You can automatically sync your iTunes library to multiple devices, and use different settings for each device.

WARNING: If you delete a synced item from your iTunes library, the deleted item is removed from your device the next time you sync.

Sync your device manually
If you use manual syncing, you can sync items from more than one iTunes library to your iPod. (You can sync iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad with only one iTunes library.)

You can manually sync music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and iTunes U lessons. You can’t manually sync photos and info (contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and so on).

Connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer and select your device.

Click the Summary button and select “Manually manage music and videos” (below Options).

Click the On This Device button.

Click Add To on the right side of the iTunes window.

Drag items from the left side of the iTunes window to the pane on the right. To add other types of content, choose a category from the Library pop-up menu.

Click Done.

If you use automatic syncing, you can also add items to your device by dragging. To drag items to an automatically synced device, follow the instructions above, but skip step 2.

Thank you. I found a YouTube video demonstrating this and I think I understand at least part of what you guys are describing. If manual sync is used you are not using the sync pane at all. You are dragging from the normal view window so you can do list views etc.

Then if you manually delete from the IOS device itunes will not attempt to re-sync on the next connection?

Obviously the confusion is on my part. ive never used manual sync so I have never seen what AA described in his post. I'm not quite jumping up and down but I'm slowly coming to grips with what you described.

If manual sync is selected can you still click on a playlist to sync? Thanks

Drag and drop the playlist onto the device icon in the sidebar.

Thank you for all the info. It's quite a shift in thinking. I wish the automatic sync worked better but I'm glad for the manual sync you have described. It's too late to try it for this trip but I will experiment when I get home.

Deckeda's solution above works well for many.

OplayerHD is an altermative system to load movies on iOS devices. I learned about it when I had an iTunes syncing problem.
