Wow, thanks for the great feedback, one and all. I guess I forgot that OWC sold them used/refurbished, but I'm also cheap enough that I like to find ones in the $35-40 price range, as opposed to $60+.
I'd be curious to learn how you open up the "brick" case to solder on a new cord. I'd do that in a heartbeat if it wasn't too much of a hassle opening that baby up. I've seen clients try, with a screwdriver or knife, and they tend to just mangle the white plastic without gaining any traction at all.
I do know about Sugru too. The problem is that few of my clients do, nor do they take much care in handling their adapters, so they're always failing.
