I have been a Mac User for almost 30 years. I am not sure who is in charge of iTunes these days, but it has almost become unusable to me both iOS and Mac version. It is no longer simple intuitive and elegant. There are basic features that take 2-3 more moves to execute and is almost unreadable on my iPhone 5s. I don't know why it had been changed so much and for the worse.

Apple wrote the book on computer UI design, and Jony Ive wiped his ass with it.

iTunes is ALMOST as bad as the Music app in iOS.

And what are the alternatives?
I want a simple OS X application that does what iTunes used to do in the good old days: play songs by artist, album, playlist, from a local hard drive or shared from another computer.

Would that somebody revived
Casady & Greene.
It seems that the age of cool Mac software has passed.
