Windows OSes: 7 Pro or 8 Pro?
#21
GuyGene.. just.. don't connect Windows XP to the interwebs. At all. It's been off security updated for a while now. It's vulnerable as heck.

I'd go with 9.

Hey kap, no need to get an activation code for your Windows 7 as long as you can get a DVD that is branded for your device. For instance, if you use a Dell DVD to install the OS onto the Dell device it will automatically pull the activation/registration key over without any hassle at all. I do this all the time at work.

Also, if people are using Windows 8, you can get a little free app called Classic Shell and it will make Windows 8 appear to run like Windows 7, no Metro/tiled look.

This desktop was given to me. It did not come with any install CD/DVD.

but you can find a free/cheap DVD somewhere. The activation key is expensive and you don't need that.

Think of it like this:

Windows 7 = Snow Leopard (oldie, but goodie)
Windows 8 = Lion (too much, too fast)
Windows 10 = Mavs/El Cap (fixed the previous screw ups)

7 is old school, without being too old school, and not as resource intensive.

With 8, they tried new things and ended up with an ill-conceived, half-baked result.

With 10, they fixed a lot of those things, but it has much deeper hooks into the cloud, both visible, and disturbingly to some, invisible. But they also improved things under the hood, so it runs surprisingly well on old hardware. I found 10 handled limited RAM more gracefully, so that may be a consideration.
