Affinity Photo 1.5 thoughts as Photoshop alternative
#1
i am a total photoshop newbie.

heck, i'm a video guy who for 30+ yrs has been shooting motion!

but suddenly i'm starting to get stills assignments and instead of relying on photoshop elements or picasa, i was thinking about Affinity Photo 1.5 as my full fledged photo editor.

any Affinity Photo 1.5 users care to share their experiences?

how does Affinity Photo 1.5 work as a jpeg tool?

thanks in advance.

be well.

What do you think your workflow will be with the photos?

color correction? adding effects? adding text? stretching roating skewing?

Depending on your use, even picasa might be plenty...

A jepg is a jpeg is a jpeg, not sure that makes a difference.

Take a look at Pixelmator and Acorn too:

I've used it off and on for a while. Have not yet given 1.5 a full trial, but it has some new features and fixes that I'd been waiting for.

As a JPG tool, Affinity photo used to be a bit of a PITA in that it did not remember export settings. You had to set everything every time, even if you wanted to do a bunch in a row with the exact same settings.

In 1.5, Affinity Photo now remembers export settings and they've also added a batch processing feature (although haven't yet tried that).

Overall, Affinity Photo is very capable, and with every update it's getting closer and closer to being a truly viable Photoshop replacement for professional use. And at a much lower price.

If you don't mind the horrible dark UI, it's probably OK.

Can you make Paths with it? Does it handle RAW formats or DNG at least? CMYK?

Not my cup f tea either, which is part of the reason I haven't jumped on 1.5.

But, 1.6 will have a light UI option.

I have the current Adobe CC, CS 6, CS 5.5, Affinity Photo 1.5, On1 Photo 10, On1 Photo RAW 2017 and some of the MacPhun Creative Kit (but not their new Luminar). Take a look at On1 Photo RAW 2017, I really like it. They have a special on it for $99 at the moment: https://www.on1.com/products/photo-raw/

I think it's probably the closest to PS/Lightroom out of everything that's currently out there now and could probably replace them for most people's work.

Check out the editing tools in Photos - they are more robust than I expected. Of course, they aren't in the same league as PS.

Affinity kind of interests me because I think it has a vector-based sibling.
