video from Ask This Old House
Steps: *Scott first gives an explanation of the three-way switch- two switches that control one light fixture. *There are many ways that a three-way switch can be wired, but usually power or the light fixture connect to the load side of the switch and traveler wires run between traveler screws on both switches. *In this case, the traveler wire and load wire were swapped and repairing the circuit involved switching them back. There are several more videos on the site covering three-way circuits.

As mentioned before the pancake box has to many wires coming out. Should have only one set of cables coming out. But as I mentioned before. Connect the white wires together to get the light working again till the other fan comes in. And get a proper box for the cables.

The previous fans had been in place for over 17 years, although not installed by me. Pretty sure if they were gonna come down or start a fire, they'd have done so. All the same: Electrician has been called.

Yes all three white wires together. They should have been together connected to the fan when you removed it. As you know the way it was set up will work, but the pancake box is meant for a single light fixture.

Carm wrote: Thanks. I believe that is how the old fan was connected. I do wish I'd photographed it when I took it down. I'll turn off the breakers, connect these three, and see what happens. Or just wait for the electrician. I'm not in a hurry to use the new fan this time of year - it's a summertime thing.

Turn off breaker and connect them. It will work. As long as you didn't change anything else out. electrician will add the proper sized box, more than likely move it a little to the left or right of the stud.
