saw carole king's "beautiful" on bdway-thumbs up!
#1
older daughter back in nyc for a week from phd program.

wife scored via tkts booth four "discounted" tix for both daughters and wife and i.

always great to see sisters together, gabbing away and giggling (and these are young women in their mid 20s!).

saw carole king's "beautiful" on bdway-thumbs up!

quasi plot is carole king and writing partner gerry goffin against the backdrop of the brill building during the very late 50s and early 60s.

brill building: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brill_Building_(genre)

goffin and king wrote so many fabulous songs-some silly ditties but many really thoughtful narratives against very catchy melodies which is why after nearly sixty years they are still sung and thus, classics.

list of goffen and king songs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:S...arole_King

there is no better time spent than seeing loved ones smile.

be well.

Rob,

Saw Beautiful with my three years ago. Fantastic show! Great music, amazing performances and educational if you don't know much about Carol King. Definitely worth seeing!

"Jukebox musical" - find an existing body of excellent, and even well known songs by a popular artist or group, then construct the story around that, rather than the other way around.

That way there's much less need for assembling talented composers and librettists - the hits and "show stoppers" are already pre-composed.

- Beautiful - Carol King
- Mama Mia - ABBA
- Jersey Boys - The Four Seasons
- Million Dollar Quartet - various
- Rock of Ages - various
and many others

....you also have a built-in audience [ fans of the music ].....this is especially true for Mama Mia/Rock of Ages......strong draws.....but weak story lines.....

Yeah, I cringed my way through "Mama Mia".

Personal preferences, I understand that.

Deusx,

So? Doesn't lessen the greatness of the music!

Huh
I don't think I implied that it did lessen in any way. "...find an existing body of excellent...songs"

Deus,

It was the tone of your post and the emphasis on music that seemed to call into question the quality. Actually, not just of the music but the show as a whole. It's a great show.
