This is EXACTLY why I choose Z-Wave or Zigbee devices over wifi.
Most all (but not all all) wifi connected devices rely on a connection to a server in the cloud. If anything happens to that server you're likely to be disappointed.

The servers are the weak link in lots of IOT devices. 10 years from now how many of these companies will still be in business and have their servers up and running, supporting todays devices.

I have a few IOT capable devices but I don't put them in IOT mode because I just don't want to give a key to somebody I don't know somewhere I don't know where to have access to my Stuff, or let a bad guy gain access to their - and by extension - my stuff.

...And it's worse today. Imagine a company bricking the smart lock on your front door. Some things are not meant for the Internet of Things.

I still use X10 to remote control lights and appliances. No IOT for me.
