anyone else order meat directly from farmers?

I have a friend who raises cattle and we’re also acquainted with the owners of a goat milk creamery. They make incredible cheese. They frequently offer us goose eggs, beef, pork, and other bounty from their farm. It’s wonderful.

An organic farmer met a Mennonite poultry raiser at a farmers' market and started buying cases of his chickens. Infinitely better than supermarket chicken.

Edit - Should read "An organic farmer friend of mine"

What the Mennonite farmers was selling was probably an old fashioned type of meat chicken . Not the crappy mass raised supermarket type chicken .

We did it twice, splitting with family to get a 1/4 beef. We bought from an uncle who kept a few head as a hobby. We met the animals while they were growing. Didn't notice any pus. One time we got a variety of cuts; another time, we chose to get our portion as hamburger. We're not big red-meat eaters so when the uncle closed up shop we didn't pursue another source.

we buy ducks from a local organic etc poultry farm.
I can get quality commercial (B&E) org chicken and turkey at reasonable prices from local market.
The ducks at the markets have been losers or very expensive D’Artagnan, at which price I'd rather take the drive for as often as we have it.
