question about upgraded drivers license

I just upgraded my drivers license for future travel requirements and they sent me a little foil envelope to keep it in. Is that really necessary?

Many new forms of official ID contain an RFID chip. I understand that said chips can be read (harvested) by someone nearby who has the proper scanner / reader on his (her) person. Those “special envelopes” are supposed to prevent walk by scanning. I ALWAYS used protective sleeves on any “chipped” item. I bought extra sleeves on Amazon for my chipped credit cards.

Another reason I wish everyone took apple pay... no more credit cards... =)

I think you're supposed to take that foil envelope, unfold its and use it as a hat.

They added RFID chips to passports years ago, any non-chipped ones would have expired and would have been renewed since then.

Of course I might have missed a story about passports no longer having the chips, but would have expected it to have been publicized enough to not have missed it.

The passport RFID chip security was hacked in less than a day of the first passports hitting the streets.
