iOS Photos: New Album vs New Folder.
#1
I am trying to better organize my Photos.

The "+" sign in upper left brings the choice of a New Album or New Folder.

What's the difference? Thanks

I think you can store albums inside folders.

Yep. I have a folder for each year, and each “year” contains the relevant albums.

But there’s no reason it should be done this way. You could just have albums based on events such that every similar event gets lumped into the one album. I tend to think in terms of years, so I don’t for example have just one Xmas album with every Xmas photo in it .... you can easily create those automatically via Smart Albums if desired.

Tagging/keywording remain the most powerful and reliable tools for organizing but they require some work. Relying on Face ID and location data won’t work as good.

Next, I use an online service for selects, organized similarly. This gives me a convenient way to share them and a backup copy for the keepers in high quality jpeg, which if everything else goes lost, are really all what I’d want. I don’t want to have to process RAWs again. I keep the RAWs local, and it’s a luxury to be able to reprocess them, but not a necessity.

In other words I like to store some crap locally that isn’t worthy of keeping, if that makes sense. For me, Photos or other local apps are my workspace where I can doodle and ponder. I could just create a Selects library or tag them as such, but made the decision last year to separate the local from the online for further independence. I’m a SmugMug user. I bought the Power tier or whatever the non-pro one is.
