Michigan lifting of restrictions tied to vaccinations
#1
Gov. Whitmer unveiled reopening plans, and they are tied to the amount of vaccinated Michiganders.

While this seems like a smart step, to me the percentages are off, for example, if it's commonly accepted that herd immunity happens at 80%, then why is the full reopening tied to 70%? In my mind, the percentages should be at least 5% higher, better 10% higher.

And of course, the reactionaries (I'm not calling them conservatives any more) are up in arms... "government can't tell me what to do with my body..." "governments not gonna tell me how to run my life..." yada yada.

Seems like even Dem leaders are caving in. I find it a little disappointing but they've been through a lot to get us this far so I can't complain too much.

It feels like we're celebrating before we cross the finish line.

I guess it doesn't make sense to tie it to vaccination rate, although it helps. I guess this is to encourage vaccination. It should be tied to infection rate.

Few agree on what herd immunity is in terms of a percentage of vaccination. I've written this here before, but early on in the lockdown, there was an npr show with a show featuring infectious disease researchers, saying herd immunity can be achieved with as few as 40% of population. So, the variable from 40 to 80 is very wide.

Remember that the herd also includes people who cannot be vaccinated yet. Those under the age of 16.

I know of no reputable public health scientists that advocate for herd immunity at the 40% level. Plenty of 'I slept at a Holiday Inn so now I'm a public health expert' during the early days of COVID, however.

It _was_ the early days, but the experts on this particular program made certain to say that no one knows. And 40% was the least amount, obviously. I'll try to find it but it was quite a while ago.

I would honestly prefer to listen to the nations #1 expert in infectious diseases with over 50 years of work in the field.

Yes, that would be Dr. Fauci.

While all scientific discoveries involve “standing on the shoulders of giants”, the man IS one of those giants.
