"Zohran Mamdani, a little-known state lawmaker whose progressive platform and campaign trail charisma electrified younger voters, stunned former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City on Tuesday night, building a lead so commanding that Mr. Cuomo conceded.
Mr. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist from Queens, tapped into a current of anxiety around New York City’s growing affordability crisis. His joyful campaign brought new voters into the fold who rejected the scandal-scarred Mr. Cuomo’s ominous characterizations of the city and embraced an economic platform that included everything from free bus service and child care to publicly owned grocery stores."
He faces a tough race ahead, but it's an interesting outcome for Democratscto look at.

My first guess is that folks were mainly concerned with repelling Andrew Cuomo. Mamdani also made lots of wild giveaway promises. The rest of the field was tired NY Dem regulars who to say the least were uninspiring and not even agile enough to be boring.
For the actual reasons Mamdani got the votes, we'll have to see what the surveys of actual voters turn up.
In the meantime here are some of the impossible promises he made:
In videos posted during the primary race that routinely went viral – particularly on TikTok – he called for free bus rides, universal childcare for New Yorkers with children aged six weeks to five years, and rent controls and rent freezes.
He wants to plow $70 billion into housing and almost double the minimum wage from $16 to $30 an hour.
---One of Mr Mamdani’s most controversial policies is city-controlled supermarkets, where local authorities would get to decide how much food costs.
As well as being New York’s most Left-leaning mayor, he would also become the city’s first Muslim leader in a city that is home to about 770,000 Muslims.
His anti Israel politics have been manifested from at least 2021.
Last week, Mamdani said that “globalize the intifada” was a legitimate expression that could be used by Palestinian supporters.

Cuomo already hinted that he may run as an independent in the General. The Republican candidate is Curtis Sliwa, a talk show host and founder of the Guardian Angels.

from the NYT today
"Mr. Mamdani refused to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada” on a recent podcast, has called Israel’s actions in Gaza a “genocide” and has questioned Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state."

I was told being pro-Palestine/anti-Israel would have won the Presidency for the Democrats. But not the mayor of NYC?
