I could not get my old handle to register the other day. I concluded that my password did not pass muster (it was horrible), so then I tried resetting the password but could not get past "that username is already taken" syndrome. So.. I registered this username.
The weird part is that I just put in the old username and old password and I was logged in under the new username.
Huh.

I wonder if it's because both usernames are associated with the same email address.
I seem to recall that when I did the password reset to get into my old username, the process for that didn't ask for the username, but instead asked for an email address.
So, if instead of starting off by resetting password of an original username you create a new username with the same email address associated, maybe that's what why it thought it was the new username requesting a password reset.

my guess is something was wrong with your Cache/cookies and using the new username/password created a new cookie with the correct format which then allowed you to log in with the old username
