Migrating from OS9 to tiger...finally. Need help.

I got my mom a mini and we are finally ready to move her into this century.

She is primarily a surfing, word processing computer mom.

She has a lot of stored email in netscape communicator (how long has this been a dead program? Years! Maybe I should shhe her more often...lol). Is there a way to save these emails and adresses or do I have to start over from scratch?

I have hooked the mini up to the imac and transfered the complete hardrive to the mini desktop just in case.

Anything else I am forgetting? Dial up settings? etc...

When you boot OSX Mail, Click on Edit and then Import. You can choose netscape from here.

Since you copied the entire drive to the new Mac, you shouldn't need Migration Assistant to get the mail. Open Mail>File>Import Mailboxes. The Netscape mail should be in the System Folder>Preferences>Netscape something or other folder (haven't used Netscape mail in years). Select, then import. Your bookmarks are in that folder also. Any dial up settings will be set in the Network pane of System Preferences on the new Mac. Good luck.

Unless someone's developed a workaround, as far as I know, only Netscape can read Netscape Mail. Even if you move it from one OS to another, there's no OS X mail app that can open or read any of it, except Netscape. All my mail from several years is in a folder, unusable. Did anyone ever develop anything that can export OS 9 Netscape mail into Apple's native mail app? As far as I know, it has no life outside Netscape's cage. True?

If you wanted to make that old mail accessible you might download the newest version of Netscape which is 7.2 and it should import your mail into it's mail program. Then you can forward it to yourself and retrieve it with whatever program you now use. If you don't think you will need all of it, you could set up a G-mail account and send it there to edit.

I just downloaded the new Netscape today and it imported my husband's e-mails from his earlier version. He won't use another mail program. I don't know why, except that he doesn't like to change and that is familiar to him.

I guess that can be a good quality, sometimes. And, we have an anniversary coming up on Wednesday. Thank goodness he hasn't wanted to "upgrade" to a newer model.
