If you have a hardware issue, this may have not made any difference, but did you Repair Permissions after you did the Tiger erase/install? Or did you use DiskWarrior to clean up the Directory on the fresh installation?
I'm not trying to pick at you about small things, but the above is something I do with Religion when doing any installation or major OS upgrade.

normally I would. But not if I'm erasing the disk first.
At any rate... I thought, well maybe I need to let it go all the way. So I tried again where I just registered but did not trasnfer any info. So I get to the desktop ok. And it ran software update. And kaplooey! Another kp.
I actually surprised I'm as composed as I am. I REALLY want to use this monster. I just can't.

One would hope that one wouldn't need to use DiskWarrior or repair permissions on fresh install, but did ya'?

What about the memory, swap it around?

ok...let me just say that I don't mean this in any disparaging way against OWC, but the computer is set up as it was from them. I am not sure how the ram was installed origianlly, nor anything else that may have been upgraded on the machine. So I don't want to go mucking around with something that i'm not alltogether sure how it should be set to begin with.
That said. i DID notice a very high pitched whine, probably from the HD, that came and went as the machine was running.

High pitched whines can come from the hard drive, capacitors....
Have you tried installing Panther to see if you can do that, if it installs use it for a bit to see if a kernel panic occurs (or not), then try to install Tiger on an upgrade path, will it install?
Have you had the computer open to see if you can better locate the source of the whine?

JMHO but I'd talk to OWC about doing a swap for you. That's too much $$$ to plunk down just to have these troubles. A PM to Larry Would probably be good.

We've already offered a return label and replacement. We bench test these with the memory installed - including the final act of installing the 10.3.5 restore onto the units prior to final prep. Memory is installed prior to all testing (full AHT, calibration, and stress testing).
the Tiger sets we include are Apple new/fresh. no reason for a problem with that.
The data transfer KP could be unrelated. And the other problem reported in the prior thread is almost certainly the Seagate SSC enable issue (Apple's SATA controller conflicts with SSC enabled SATA II HDs - even the latest Dual Core G5 Models).
It shouldn't matter - but the small possibility exists that something corrupted on the stock 250GB when all the attempts were done while the 300GB was still connected.
Run disk utility - wipe the drive clean(just initialize it) - clean install - and if the same thing happens, it's time for us to get the machine back.
It wouldn't hurt to run AHT before doing that if want to make sure the machine is 100%. It's a couple hour test - which the machine with the memory installed did pass prior to shipment.
Gotta remind Mr. Murphy that St. Patrick's Day has already passed. He needs to take a rest.
