Can a UPS Damage your PMac G5?
#11
rexrzer- be careful w/ that belkin; I've had a few client installations where the loads were too close for comfort, and experienced the random shut downs first hand, and can attest to their reality. all belkins have been redeployed to light load workstations, and function fine when potential capacity is much lower, rather than closer to max. OTOH, the higher capacity APC's & TrippLites have made funky warning noises without crapping out, as not-so-subtle hints to re-adjust capacity. after the belkin experiences of the past, I'm using a similar rated APC unit to what you passed up for the same DC 2.3 G5. also, the new G5's w/ the new and different connector and heavier cable make a bunch of low level power noises when plugged in; not powered on, as though some goodies are getting juiced, and I wonder if whatever those electronics are, have anything to w/ the random shut downs...

ss,

I can't assess the situation from just that note alone. There seem to be many unanswered questions. Two that come to mind:

1. Is the UPS used with the G5 properly rated for the task?

2. Some UPSs have USB ports so it can tell the computer to shutdown in the event of a power outage. Were these machines connected to the UPS via USB?

What is seems to be more of is a case of someone running a big power-draw Mac off of a bargain-basement UPS that isn't rated for that kind of hardware, and then proceeding to complain about it. I've seen set-ups like this before, where even servers are hooked up to the cheapie lowest-end UPS that you can get from CompUSA.

FWIW I have an APS XS 1500 as the UPS for my G5 (Dual 2GHz).

Zoid,

I hear ya! I use the same UPS for my tower and LCD display and a different UPS for peripherals, i.e. external hard disk drive (for backups).
