I have an aunt who's a nurse and she swears by it.I've heard you need MSM with it (Glucosamine with chondroitin) for it to work best. I remember James Coburn saying he cured his arthritis with MSM.
I believe these tests that debunk natural cures are bogus (follow the money). There's a hundred ways to rig them.

I starting taking it about 10 years ago and notice significant improvements. However, I also started taking grape seed extract about the same time. GSE has Pycnogenol as the active ingredient. This antioxidant is the same stuff in red wine and pine bark.
Anyway , I stopped taking glucosamine, continued the GSE and haven't looked back. But YMMV.

[quote Psurfer]A large (1200+ subject) study by NIH was far from positive. They determined that subjects who took glucosamine + condroitin for 6weeks for OA knee pain had no better results than those taking placebo. But, the study noted that there was a small group that did benefit, which could be worthy of further research.
Another study of longer-term use is in progress, of the effects of 2yrs use. -Should test the claim of Glu/condr's ability to build back up cartilage.
I just read about this as well. Seems it's not any better than placebo - however, that doesn't mean it doesn't work. If it works for even 10 people - it's worth studying -IMO.
My mother takes it and swears by it. Also, it's used alot for horses to keep their joints healthy. My mother also has a horse - who takes mega doses of it. However, the horse doesn't seem to want to talk about it much.

AHHh you're right! I wonder if the doses they used in the clinical studies were high enough? Sometimes in those studies - they find out the dosages were too low. I was in an FDA study and the company was hoping that a very lose dose of the mysterious substance that I took and that I can't tell you about because then I'd have to kill you - would "work" - and 6 months into this mysterious substance trial - the company bumped the dosage of whatever I was getting that I can't tell you about - and people started responding. I, however, didn't respond to the mysterious substance.
3 years later and the FDA finally approved this mysterious substance - which really wouldn't make it mysterious except for the fact that I'm not gonna tell you what it was. The FDA actually denied it the first time through - and then it squeezed by after this mysterious company did more studying.
I was quoted in a fairly major newspaper in an article about this mysterious substance.
Want to know what it is? I've already give you all the clues you need to know.
heheeh
And no, I'm not "on" this mysterious substance now. I'm just sniffing glue as usual.

FYI, for the fish oil(omega-3s) to help, you need a combined EPA and DHA dosage of 3 grams (up to 5 grams). That isn't 3 grams of fish oil, it is 3 grams combined of EPA and DHA. That can be anywhere from 5-10+ capsules a day.

Glucosamine Sulfate has worked very well for me (500mg /3 times daily). The first 2 months of taking GS I only noticed a small positive change in pain from my knees. Over the course of taking it consistently for 6 months the difference was great! I too have heard that the effectiveness of GS can vary significantly from person to person. Dave

I tried it for a while for a very bad knee and it did not help. Last October I tried the solution that really worked - a bionic knee joint. Now I get around like I never had a problem.
