mini, ipod, imac, mbp all look like they are due... disclaimer: I do not have any inside info from the company. However, I *do* have access to channel inventory, and looking at that and making a guess, I'd say (some model, or maybe all models of) the iPod, the Mac mini, the Airport and the iSight are all getting a refresh pretty soon. The iMac is selling like hotcakes and sitting pretty -- refresh looks less likely to me at the moment, but perhaps they'll do something in time for xmas buying season. The MBPs I would say are the least likely for refresh -- Apple can't even keep up with orders NOW. Apple RARELY refreshes a model when it's selling really well unless a component is going away or they have a serious flaw they have to correct. Could be wrong, tho. Repeat: this is a GUESS based on channel inventory.

Well, I do think the MacBook Pro has to get the Merom CPU pretty soon, or it risks falling behind the competition.
Will also be interesting to see which direction Apple takes the iMac in for its next CPU: Conroe or Merom? Certainly the latter would be the easier refresh, but if they could put a G5 inside the iMac, they can easily accomodate a Conroe, component prices notwithstanding. I'm thinking they take the path of least resistance, and hoping they have a new product line waiting that uses Conroe. So I think the iMac and MacBook Pro are slam dunks for revision by EOY. The Mac mini has a decent chance, and the MacBook has an outside chance for a speed bump or even a move up to Merom itself. The Airport base station line really needs a refresh, but one has to assume Apple's waiting on 802.11n or whatever to be closer to finalization.

I should clarify my post a bit.
When I mentioned the airports and iSights, I did not mean that they will be replaced with new or redesigned products, though that could happen. I meant that they have all but disappeared in the channel, meaning (usually) that Apple is retooling them to use different (presumably cheaper and/or better) parts. The products might very well look and act exactly the same from a consumers pov. |
