iPod for the Wife... Nano or Video?
#1
My wife has been hinting that she wants some tunes off of iTunes and the fact that her CD's are everywhere and that "she doesn't have all her cd's in one easy to find location". SO, I'm thinking of picking up an iPod for my wife for an anniversary gift. Seeing she loves to exercise (when she has time but there isn't much time for that anymore) and for the fact that she's always dropping her cell phone I figured a nice iPod Nano would due the trick. However, I'm thinking that 4 gigs isn't enough space. I'm looking at refurbished pricing (Maybe refurbished isn't a good idea for a gift but we are on a budget) and for $199 I can get her a 30 GB iPod Video versus the 4 GB for $169. But obviously it isn't as durable as the Nano.

Will we be seeing larger Nano's before October (just guessing because obviously know one knows for sure)? Is the 30 GB Video durable enough? Should I just "GIVE" my wife my 40 gig iPod photo and conveniently pickup a 60 gig video for myself?... Smile

I've also thought about picking her up a 2 GB Nano for $129 and teach her how to organize her libraries. I figure this would be a good stepping stone for her to see how often she uses it.

4 gigs is plenty of space and an iPod video is not a good exercise accompaniment device. You don't need to synch every tune in your library with the iPod...just set up iTunes so that it just adds certain playlists to the iPod (which can be changed at any time). Anyhow, how much digital music do you have?...4 gigs will give you 1,000 songs or almost 100 albums.

Well me personally I have over 2700 songs on my iPod and have the resolution set a little higher than normal because "I" think it sounds better. My wife probably couldn't tell the difference.

She probably would only need a 2-4 gig nano. Maybe I can talk myself into a MacBook from the education store so I could get a free iPod... Smile

Thanks!

I'm really confused about your budget. Somehow her present slid downward from a refurb to a 2nd-hand one to a freebie acquired by buying a MacBook. It sounds like you're only on a budget when it is gift-giving time. I know you have liberally applied smilie faces but I don't know if you really are kidding or not.

Yes/No... We discussed getting a MacBook last night (lowend) as a nice second station at home... Then today I was thinking about getting my wife a iPod as a gift...

So, I can spend upto $199 without taking too much crap on a gift for my wife. $1000+ for a laptop that we don't need right now is a family discussion.

So, $129 for a 2 gig, $169 for a 4 gig or $199 for a iPod Video.

Hmmm. I think you need to get the macbook with free iPod, give both of them to the wife, but then you'll still need to come up with a gift for her...perhaps a nice trip to Hawaii?

If she's dropping hints about having all her music in one place I'd go with the iPod Video. If you do get a Nano, get the 4 gig.

If she's hinting you shouldn't be procrastinating. :-)

Course, I don't know where your wife draws the line between extremely subtle hints and begging. :-)

get the video and an armband.

The "skipping" problem (which is really locking up) is only a problem for maybe 1% of users, even less if you have the iPod in an armband. I must caution you that even at 1%, that is tens of thousands of users. If you wife has a normal smooth gait when she runs or jogs, it shouldn't be an issue. I have never heard of it being a problem on a stair master or eliptical machine.

yes, I know all about the iPods and exercise-related issues. we went through 3 3rd gen iPods before Apple finally stepped up to the plate and gave us a video as a replacement. the 3rd gens were the worst.

Umm, if she want's all her music in one place, shouldn't that be the hard drive on a Mac,via iTunes? If so, then she could just rotate her favorites into the iPod.

My point is that a nano would be fine for this purpose, and better (more shock resistant, lighter to carry around). Think about it: 4Gigs = about 60 albums, depending on your sampling rate. That ought to carry her for a while, no?
