Free to me Lime iBook - what to do?
#1
Count my lucky stars or else I was in the right place at the right time - one of the profs here at the university was moving offices today, and I stopped in to say hi. As I get suckered into helping move a filing cabinet, I look down into a drawer and see a clamshell power adaptor, and knowing he doesn't frequently use macs, asked if he had one. Low and behold, sitting a little lower in the drawer, a 366/320/10gig/CD lime green clamshell. He said, go ahead and take it - it was given to him and he had no use for it.

What to do with it? It doens't have an airport card, but boots up fine to 9.0.4, I'm testing the battery right now - though it's likely not got much life to it since I don't know how long it was sitting in that drawer. I see PeterB is the resident expert... I've got discs from my newer ibooks for 10.2.x and 10.4.x - and apparently with a properly massaged disk image I can fit either on with my external usb drive... or should I just off to ebay with it? Looks like ~$300 is possible there, or should I be good and donate it? Ah, such questions - what say you, forum?

The 366?! That thing's got FireWire!

You've got a great iBook there. A 1:1 L2 cache, 10/100 ethernet and FireWire make it zippy and quite useful. And for some reason, Lime is a collector's color which drives the price up.

Good going!

Those fetch a pretty penny on eBay. Or you can trade with me for my Lombard Powerbook, 333/256/10GB.

I've got the indigo one. I upped the memory to 576 MB, change out the hard drive to 40GB and added an airport card. With 10.3.9 it is a useful computer.

I do like ztirffritz's idea of Linux.

The *MOST* logical thing to do with it would be to clean it up as cheaply as possible, then ebay it for as much as possible. (BIN-only auctions are your friend).

Then, with the insanely high amount you get for it, buy something much more usable. (Either a G3 500 ibook [not prone to logic failure] or put it toward a Macbook)

Of course, that's the most logical thing to do. Cash in while it's fetching more than its worth, then get something that's more useful for yourself.

The Lime iBook was the second generation SE model. The processor speed should be 466MHz and the optical drive is a DVD-ROM.

I would sell it for a nice profit and call it a day. If you are in a giving mood, Harbourmaster seems interested and so am I. Keep us updated.

The first key lime iBook was 366MHz.

The second was 466. I've got that model (ordered with the 20GB HD option). Coupled with an AirPort card, it makes a great surfing computer (fantastic reception). Running Panther respectably (although the relatively coarse 800x600 screen resolution leaves a bit to be desired).
