need a non-pro subwoofer

both of my kids will be receiving altec lansing im600 for music in their bedrooms. I auditioned many many players and found this one to sound the best in it's price range. It was $150 when I bought it and now sells for as low as $100 on amazon, an amazing deal considering it has a remote, fm receiver, audio input, video output, and a sub output! Oh, btw, it has an ipod cradle AND an internal battery making it ideal for throwing in a suitcase when traveling for an extended stay. I sound like a commercial. At any rate, I'd like to put a small, and reasonably attractive, subwoofer in each room to complement the sound. Any recommendations?

Price range? And what's the lowest frequency the unit plays, + or - 3db?

My price range is under $100 and it must be aesthetically pleasing. Either black or wood, nothing that "looks" like a computer sub. I'm leaning towards the tivoli because their radio's sound so good. I found specs on the altec lansing but can't find anything on the tivoli except, "5 ¼" bass driver, 20 watt internal amplifier"

I like the Logitech subs in black. They really don't look any more like "computer subs" than any other black box. The one I have works very well. I'm sure the Tivoli will be OK too. Subwoofer driver size for a system like this is not very important as long as it's 5" or more, and 10W or more is a good number for power to the subwoofer. Bass response to 50 Hz or lower will be just fine. It'll sound like real music to most.

I actually bought an Altec-Lansing 2.1, and the subwoofer is the best part. $50. I had the same idea/thought as you, too. You just don't have to attach the sats, if you like. And it's slim. Try it.

This is a "Pro" subwoofer:



Not for home use, but rather live sound reinforcement. Capable of over 130dB output. However still not very good at the lowest bass (under 40Hz).
