Oh boy, went to the doc with 1 year old son. Couldn't draw blood
#1
As it happens, it's his birthday today. His very first birthday!

Anyway, they wanted to draw some blood to run some tests. The nurse couldn't find the blood vessel, after she tried for like 3 minutes before I asked her to STOP and she took the needle out of my son and she seemed a little bit offended! I know it's tough, but as a parent I have the right to decide when enough is enough. We go again on Thursday, then we'll try the other arm. Poor boy...

Glad I wasn't there. That was a Geneva Conventions violation.

When I went in to the hospital to have my gall bladder removed, the nurse kept poking and prodding trying to get the IV in for the sedation. I told her that if she didn't get it in soon they were going to have to wake me up to knock me out. I was just about to pass out from all the poking. She finally switched to the other hand and it went right in, thank goodness.

I don't blame you a bit for stopping the nurse when you did.

They had to re-hydrate my 1 y.o. daughter when she had the flu.

After trying the arms and heels, they finally found a vein in the forehead.

Mom stayed. I left the room.

My husband had the same thing happen when he went into the doctors office with the flu, they wanted to give him fluids to rehydrate him and had a heck of a time finding a vein, when they finally did they left the needle in and taped over it so when he came back the next day he wouldn't have to go through that again, he said his arm hurt for at least a week afterwards. I think you did the right thing.

There is a definite level of skill and experience that is required to draw blood from children. Unfortunately, not all Nurses or practitioners in the system have achieved that level. We have seen both ends of the spectrum with our kids and you did the right thing to put a stop to the process when you did.

The nurse should have offered someone else with more experience instead of copping an attitude. I would not hesitate to ask for someone else to try when you go back. Don't let them make you think that it is something that you or your son are causing, they should be able to handle it.

Last time I was the hospital they got a good sample read it three days before the sample arrived. 15 days in the slammer. DMV let me off but Santa Clara County has no concept of the law.
