Cringely has been doing that for years.
Pays folks in the valley to get high-speed so he can set up a feed to his house on the top of the mountain.
Leo Leporte did a show on long range WiFi a few years ago.
Congrats!
Oh, BTW, Pringles Cans, or old Dish Network antennae work even better than the Backfire.

I could! But I'd have to remember the difference between WAN, LAN, MAC, ping, and the other 50 things that are part of the network lexicon.

FWIW, you may want to keep this on the down-low with your 'hood. Most ISPs disallow this practice.

[quote billb][quote Racer X]we were getting wireless signals out on Lake Washington from over a mile away to the nearest shore with just a laptop with card hooked up to a 9' antenna on top of the boat.
Oh, and most were named "linksys"
Hey, those are the ideal conditions the manufacturers use in their claims ! :-)
(manufacturers often double db ratings for a marine environment just because of the theoretical lack of terra impediments)
9db gain omni 9' tall antenna on the flybridge of a 30' Tolly, so it was maybe 22 feet in the air.

Cool, good to hear.
One thing I've always considered is if it would be possible to put a dish or something to reflect a signal off on one of the mountains(Small, of course) so I could point a Cantenna at it and have wireless in quite a few places.
The other solution would be to use the mesh network 'linksys' that boulder seems to be engulfed in.
Hope your solution continues to work for you!

Why would they disallow this? He is not using/sharing his neighbor's connection. Sounds like has his own end-of-the-line connection which he is simply completing the connection to on his own.
