Actually, it's a satellite modem into my ethernet port, but I figured that they worked the same, more or less, in that they don't "turn off". I could be wrong, though.
Anyway, I still have dialup, and if I want to go online via dialup, the only way I've been able to figure out is to unplug satellite modem from computer ethernet port and then just dial-in via modem.
Am I wrong - is that the only way to do it - it seems that I would have to be offline via ethernet port to go online vial phone line...
Appreciate any advice here...

Why do you want to use dial up?

System Preferences>Network>Show Network Port Configurations>uncheck Ethernet box and check Modem box.
The downside to this is that you'll lose all Ethernet connectivity, but if this is just a short-term arrangement/test then that shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks Yoyodyne
Only want to connect via modem short-term while I make switchover in AOL email use and now using Mail - still need to clean up a few things there.
I realize that I can do AOL email via webmail, but for awhile now, I still want to get it downloaded and saved on my drive, so I'll connect every few days and retrieve mail.
Right now, I have both ethernet and modem checked with ethernet being listed first. Just uncheck it and I'll be offline - right? Yeah, that's it.
Thanks a lot.

There are also programs to export your AOL addresses.
You should be able to keep your AOL email address for free. When you cancel-Make sure you get a confirmation number. They may offer 3 months for free--then start billing you card again.

Thanks for the additional input - so I'll give a little - I know that a handful of folks here use AOL and maybe this little tidbit will help them, economically.
I know that AOL receives total derision from nearly all, but, for dialup (I'm "rural") being my only feasible option for so long, I began with them long ago and stayed. A few years ago I even fell prey to the constant "...why don't you AOLers get a REAL ISP?...." and the like and signed on with an additional "real ISP". Found that I got better connect speeds on a regular basis with AOL, oftentimes 28.8 (max possible) and if not that, then 26.4 which I usually kept. Anything lower and I signed off and back on.
AND, I could stay connected as long as I wanted - weeks on end if I wanted. Can't do that with any "real ISP" that I know.
Off track here a little, I know, but just the facts, ma'am...just the facts.
So, when I got satellite a week ago or so, I was sort of wanting to keep AOL until I saw how things went, certainly as a backup if stormy weather or something else kept me off air for any length of time.
BUT, I didn't want to continue with the $25 or so that they had increased their price to and didn't want to do some 10 hours/month thing for a low rate. Some months back I had heard of people threatening to quit and being offered better pricing, so I was prepared to go this route.
Just in checking AOL's site before I called to try to negotiate a lower rate and keep unlimited access, well, there it WAS! A NEW plan offered by AOL for $10/month with unlimited access - I can't tell what the difference is with it and what I was using. I changed to it and now have it.
This NEW plan is the info that may be useful to those few here that may be able to use it; sorry the rest of youse had to read it....if my sacrifice helps just ONE person.......blah blah blah......
Oh, and by the way, for any considering satellite (because it is your ONLY option for a faster connection) well, I'm VERY happy with it so far - went with HughesNet. I love it - really. I was very apprehensive, having read a lot of negative stuff, but so far it has been better than I had hoped - very nice!

Great post, ima, especially the 714 reference.
While the BYOISP program is free, and fully featured, that $10/mo plan probably gets you Tech Support, should you need it. No support with the free plan.
I still use AOL even though I have a .Mac account as well.

714?????
I'm totally stumped on THAT - were you replying to MY post? I can't find 714 anywhere, or is that *code* for something I should know 'bout but don't.
I wanted the $10 plan so that I would have a secondary method to get online in case of unforseen probs with sat and the occasional expected disconnect in severe storms. Happened the next day after I got it installed - thunderstorm knocked me offline for about 5 minutes or so - could have been longer if storm had lasted longer.
