Reading Pr0nnie's posting got me thinking- how long was the longest you've gone without sleep for work, "Professinally" ?
Me: working on a military contract proposal for a battlefield radar in the early 80's. Genius VP got us into the bid with one week before it was due. I had to design all the control electronics and human interface, spec them out, document them, and do a cost analysis. I stayed up from Thursday morning at 6 Am until Monday at about 6 Am. No Doz, coffee, talking to myself, walking around. I think the security guards were convinced I was insane, and were probably fingering their .45's.
Words like "Refrigerator" and "Beer" started appearing in the proposal documents, so I staggered home and slept for about 16 hours.
So that makes it what, 94 hours, right ?
Now my body refuses to wake up if I don't get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. I tried to pull and all nighter a few months ago, and crashed after about 22 hours.

Does an all nighter in college during the final exam week count? Yes, it was all work ... though not professionally.

Wow. I've never come close to 94 hours. 48 hours every year over two weekends in March and April. College, but it was putting on a professional event in which I was an officer, a videographer and a performer on stage. Though I'm in Grad School now, I can't make it all night without a bit of a crash somewhere. If a night's rest is divided up during times of video compression I can make it a few days.

cbelt3, you're lucky you didn't die. It's not uncommon for people to die after 72hrs of no sleep, especially with what you were taking in.

After watching Altered States I tried all kinds of experiments on myself including various chemicals in combination with sleep deprivation. I never made it a full 48 hours before crashing.

It's wonderful to know that our nation's security rides on the rails of snake oil used car salesmen who make commitments that cause your situation to happen, a situation that even medical interns would say "Wow...." to.
I can only imagine being the grunt in the field who has to work your wonder of sleepless design. I can hear that grunt saying, "Damn, who designed this crap? Was he asleep or what?"

There was an article a few months back about a gamer at an internet cafe who died after ~72hrs of playing video games and taking in a lot of caffein and sugar. I googled to try and find it, but noticed there's a ton of other stuff on it.

Yeah, when I saw this thread's title, I thought I had a shot at being the top dog, with a Wed. morning to Fri. evening (58 hours straight) stint. I slept almost 24 hours--my g/f (now wife) tried to wake me up Sat. morning and apparently I was incoherent.
