Freakin Ebay

Sold G5 iMac 2 months ago. Positive feedback left by each. Email one month ago. “what’s the password?”

It’s blank, leave the password field blank. Just like I wrote on the packing slip taped to your freakin computer.

Today Paypal tells me there’s a dispute. WTF? Item not as described.

He said Apple said iMac needs new logic board.

Freakin’ Mac was working flawlessly when I had it.

Apple said warranty void cause case was opened.


UMM it’s 2 years old and I am allowed to open the case to, I don’t know upgrade the RAM or something.


I think Jackass went to Apple store for a password and they tried to sell him a new Mac. Especially after he realized he paid too much for a used iMac.

I would refund and sell again but you never get it back in the same condition it was sent.

I have never had a dispute before and read that Paypal always sides with the buyer.

I clear my Paypal account after every transaction. If buyer wins judgement will Paypal withdraw from my bank account?

Did you give a guarantee in the auction? If so what was it?

Was it listed "as-is" ? If so then he will have a hard time getting his money back from PayPal.

Did you specify a time frame for arranging a return due to the item arriving DOA? If that time frame has passed then again it is going to be tough for him to prove that the item was not as described.

Situations like this is why I'd rather sell my old G5 iMac to someone I know.

Yep, or your credit card. Wrong. PayPal lost a nice little lawsuit over this practice a few years ago, and has not yanked funds without authorization since then.

If you do lose a dispute, then the buyer is generally instructed to send the item back to you. Once tracking shows that you have received it, Paypal refunds the buyer. They'll take any funds in your paypal account to do so. If there is not enough to cover it, your account will go negative. Any incoming payments will be used to fulfill the refund. You will not be able to send any payments (including payment of ebay fees) until your account is brought back to zero. They can and will "piggyback" the owed amount onto any payments you might make, but there is full disclosure as to the total amount you are authorizing to be pulled form your selected funding source, and you do have the option to decline to make any payments.

Regarding the dispute itself, assuming that it has been more than 6 weeks since the payment was made, you should prevail in a SNAD claim. If it's a chargeback, things are iffier. Are you subject to a PayPal claim, or a CC chargeback?

I don't believe paypal will withdraw without permission. But, your Paypal/Ebay account will be rendered useless.


What type of warranty did you include with it?

You're a pretty knowledgeable person, start making up all kinds of excuses. "Probably added unsupported third party software." "May have reloaded the OS from a faulty CD" "He may have altered hardware."

Don't forget to request the buyer send in written proof that it is faulty. (just another hurdle for him to jump).

I may have some extreme windows for warranties, but I'm sick of people abusing sellers on ebay and don't want to have to deal with things like that myself.

Follow Paypals requirements. No warranty right? You have to prove that the machine was in working order when they received it.

The buyer had to abide by your terms, did you indicate any warranty? Paypal should side with you, the thing was working when you sent it, otherwise the buyer would have complained as soon as he got it. From the time the sale was completed and the buyer received the item, any number of things could have happened to the iMac (user tried to upgrade something and broke a part/ a part finally got worn and died). The buyer is scum, for trying to screw you.

My current advice, after viewing the auction...

Drag it out as long as possible.

And after doing the math, I'm pissed off. This is the 45th day. He's trying to scam you and he knows what he's doing. (speculation).


Also, keep in mind that if he returned a box of rocks, paypal would probably still view that as the item having been returned..

Very interesting. PayPal just told a friend of mine they would remove funds if the account went negative (they're currently dealing with what appears to be a bogus dispute.) I'll have to pass the info along and see what they find out.

I had a PayPal dispute last year with a lamp that I bought off eBay. Seller barely packed it up in a few sheets of newsprint. Of course it showed up broken. She stalled for a while claiming she'd either send me a new one or refund my money. Never happened.

PayPal sided with me in the dispute but said there was nothing they could do b/c her account was empty. They said that if she added money into her account for any reason, they could then refund to me what was put in but not until that happened. Shortly thereafter, her eBay account was deactivated.
