The Surprising Success of an Ultra-Cheap Car

. . .Americans might be finally warming up to the idea of auto downsizing via fuel-sipping compacts like the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and Scions. But the Dacia Logan represents a new trend, a move toward ultra-cheap cars. In France, a Logan can cost as little as 7,600 euros (about $11,000). It is the cheapest car in Europe and was originally targeted for Eastern Europe, Asia and South Africa.

But to everyone’s surprise (especially Renault’s), the Logan has also been a huge sales success in Western Europe. France and Germany alone accounted for nearly 15 percent of the Logan’s 159,173 mid-2007 sales total. . . .

Is it my me or does 40mpg seem so-so for a 1.5-liter turbodiesel?

So-so? It's pathetic. My Golf TDI routinely gets 50 mpg with a 1.9-liter turbodiesel.

I don't consider $11K "Ultra cheap" either...
Cheap, yes... But "Ultra Cheap", IMHO, starts under $9K.

Of course, that's the opinion of a cheapskate....

Definitely so-so. I got 57mpg (US) in a Ford Focus Maxi diesel driving for hours in spain with a/c and average 150mph. I get over 40mpg (US) with a Toyota Corolla 1.8L gasoline. Suggest a tune-up is in order, or perhaps a softer foot!

my dad drives one. it's OK, but I don't know how reliable it is in the long term, he bought it two years ago and so far no problems. I drove it this summer when I went back home.

Now that I don't believe, especially as the top speed (under perfect conditions) is 125 mph. Perhaps you meant kph.

Depends on which gallon you are talking about. US gallon @ 3.6l vs UK gallon at 4.5l. For a UK gallon not good - for a US gallon ok.

40 mpg US is "average" -- even the civic gets that -- and thats a really nice car...
