Did the update through Software Update, and restarted. Now I'm getting a strange font in some web pages. Seems to be the Arial font has been substituted with something else. As I'm typing this message, the message text is coming up in the new font. I can barely read it.
Here's a screen grab from google.com:

And, one of me typing this message:

Anybody have any ideas what happened?

go into your preferences (Safari > Preferences > Appearance) and see what your default fonts are. change them to something you like better than what you've shown here.
good luck

Now that I think about it, I don't believe it's anything like that. I bet the font Arial is messed up somehow. I copied the top left most text out of the Google page, pasted it into TextEdit, and figured out that all of that text up there is Arial.
I'll try tomorrow to see if I can isolate it and maybe replace Arial with a fresh copy from another machine.
Thanks again!

I've had one bit of wierdness updating from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 so far (which I did Monday night). My little calendar app (Pando Calendar) had odd shadings and font wierdness which adjusting all the prefs couldn't touch. I fixed it by updating to a newer version.

I found the problem! One of my Arial typefaces must have been bad. I grabbed all of the variations of Arial from another machine (Arial, Arial Black, Arial Narrow, Arial Rounded Bold, ArialHB.ttf, ArialHBBold.ttf), and transplanted them into the problem machine. Opened Safari, pulled up google.com, and another site that was giving me trouble, and all is good!
Surf on.

Forgot to mention... I also purged all instances of Arial that I could find, then put the new copies in.
