New imac needs more storage options

I have a MacPro with three FW800 HDD's daisy chained, not a problem.

Concur with BGnR heartily on this. OWC Jamie can go into detail, but it has to do with controllers. Theoretically, USB2 is "just as fast or faster than FW400" but in real world usage, it's not even a contest. FW400 trumps it every time.

indeed, and go with FW800 if you can get it (afford it, if it's an option, etc.). You'll never say "man, I wish I had just gotten the slower connection".

The OWC Mercury drives are great, but I'll put in a vote for the OWC miniStack v3. Love 'em, lots of connectivity options, attractive package, never any problems. (YMMV.)

Several G5's had a problem with more than two drives on a chain and it was supposedly related to slow writes problem. http://www.barefeats.com/fire43.html#redface I read a story over a year ago (can not find it at the moment) that the first version of Intel Macs had a similar problem.

There was also that white 2.16GHz 24" C2D iMac that had high speed FW. It was the first iMac to sport FW800. Now, all of the current iMacs have it.

G5s FW 800 has always sucked, but there was never a problem with multiple drives -- and there wasnt a problem with other macs FW 800

the FW 800 issue was limited to the G5s on-board FW 800 -- when used with a PCI FW 800 card it was perfectly fine

I've had my G5 iMac running since 11-05 with a 320 GB external FW drive for video content and backups. No problems so far...
