I'm confused. If you've already got anon FTP setup on your machine and they can get files from you that way, it should be as easy as uploading a file. Put and Get are basic parts of the file transfer protocol.

What OS?

In Leopard, you may already know that turning FTP on is controlled through System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing.

User permissions are limited in the same ways any other file sharing protocol would be. If you want someone to leave you a file in your User Account, they would need to go to your Public Folder -> Drop Box.

First, the other side is on Windows. They are using their browser to download files by typing using my IP. I don't think they can upload that way and I don't want to set up an account for them on my machine.

Try using a real FTP program...

I'm still confused. So you have FTP enabled because otherwise they couldn't see your machine via FTP. And you've somehow configured anonymous FTP. How did you do that? Are you sure you haven't simply granted read access to a guest user?

One way or another, if you want them to have write access to your Mac, you're going to have to setup a user on your machine that they can write with.

in the Users folder there is a folder named ftp. In it, there is an anonymous folder and then an incoming. I don't recall creating any of them myself. People see the incoming folder.

Did you give them FTP access to a certain folder only? Check permissions on the folder allowed by the user. In terminal, type ls -lah and drag and drop the folder into terminal. The top line should read:

drwxr-xr-x 5 (username) (groupname) 170B Jul 17 2007

that should tell you the permissions.
