I just listened to an interview with Harry Reid - he's on a book tour.

It was an interview on the radio, and some of it was pretty interesting, especially the personal details of his early life. He truly did come from nothing.

However, when the interview ventured into politics it got a bit weird.

He said that when he was Lieutenant Governor of Nevada he was shocked to find out that organized crime was operating in Nevada. Shocked!

He said that he thought that sort of thing only happened in New York and New Jersey!

I'm not sure if it would be worse if he's telling the truth or lying.

Why would he lie about that?

How could he be that stupid?

It is a "lose-lose" statement.

Are you sure he wasn't making a joke?

There's a very famous line in Casablanca where Captain Renault says "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!" Are you sure he wasn't riffing on that? Because the "only happened in New York and New Jersey" line sounds pretty facetious as well.

I would like to hear that part of the interview for myself before passing judgment, to be honest.

Was thinking it was sarcasm as well.

He would have to be the king of deadpan humor if he was making a joke. He went on to talk about listening in on wiretaps of mobsters. I'm pretty sure he was serious.

Maybe he never watched The Godfather...

So he was elected LG in 1970 and only previous state level election was '67 in the state assembly

having not been involved in the political machine before that it;s possible he wasn't on the CC list
(and yes - these were actual cc's (carbons for the hip)

I think we take for granted the amount of info a freshman legislator had coming in.
He wasn't exactly from a connected family.

I'd venture to say with no actual ability to prove it - other than common sense (being generous)
that it was pretty easy to conceal this stuff.

Perhaps I'm just naive (or playing so on the forum)

Weird how your post shows up hours after I posted my response even though your post is time stamped prior to mine.

Something must be wrong with the forum...

He was also raised as a Mormon (still is AFAIK) so his lack of understanding of the state as a whole might be viewed in that context.
