I need iBook bits & pieces. Where to get 'em?
#1
I've got a 14" 1Ghz iBook that needs a new hard drive and a 12" 1.33Ghz iBook that needs a new optical drive.

Has anyone run across any great deals on these parts lately? If so, where?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

You can get a laptop hard drive anywhere. Check Newegg. They usually have good prices and fast shipping. For the optical drive check iFixit here --> http://www.ifixit.com/Products/G4-12-Inc...ives/15/48

I've seen a few iBooks on the local Craigslist being sold for parts.

Follow-up: Big "Duuuuh!"

I put the one with the good hard drive (the 12") in "Target Disk Mode" and then used the one with the good optical drive (the 14") to officially make the 12" my own by erasing the previous owner's spooge and installing a new OS.

I'll check NewEgg for the hard drive as directed.

Thanks again for your help. Big Grin

Glad you are already halfway to salvaging these two iBooks. Always nice to read successful Mac salvage stories.

Friendly reminder (which you probably already know anyway), installing a hard drive in either the 12" or 14" iBook is almost a complete disassembly. Proceed with caution. Use a walkthrough and figure out a method of keeping track of parts and screws before beginning. Good luck.

Not sure about the place to settle on for parts (they have 'em), but their FREE step by step guides (downloadable as PDFs too) have screw guides at the end of the document that can be printed and you can tape your screws to them (in order of the process) for safekeeping.

Definitely worth a look if you're planning to do the surgery yourself.
