Can I use a G3 iBook instead for....?
#1
Regarding this thread:

http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/494...msg-494988

Seems I can't find a G4 in my price range.

All I want to do with it is email, web and remotely connect to the iMac in our upstairs study.

I believe Screen Sharing is only available in Leopard (not Tiger) and Leopard wouldn't be compatible with a G3 iBook. However, is there something else I can use instead to access the iMac running Leopard upstairs?

I use http://www.logmein.com/ from work all the time to access my iMac at home, so I'm thinking that I can just pick up a cheap G3 and use this instead of Leopard's Screen Sharing.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

You can use VNC on a G3 to to access the iMac upstairs.

Thanks. I have used Chicken of the VNC in the past to try and troubleshoot my father's eMac remotely and had variable luck with that.

Haven't heard of the one to which you linked. May check it out. Thanks.

There should be plenty of G4 Powerbooks in this price range. Can probably get somewhere between a 667 and a 1ghz TiBook for that price.

Really? I'd love to find something that can run Leopard, so I'd need a G4 with an 867 or higher. I'd prefer a 12", so I guess that's why I was looking at the iBooks.

Maybe I'll check eBay again, but search for a PB instead of iBook.

Thanks.

Ah, the 12" G4 powerbooks are all the AlBooks. They pull a hefty price premium. You MIGHT be able to get a 12" 867mhz G4 Powerbook for $300 if you search ebay religiously. The ones I were referring to are all 15" models.

Okay, thanks for the info.

Get ARD and you can use a Pismo. Surely someone has loaded Leopard on a "lesser" machine via Target Mode, yes??

I've not done it yet with my Pismo, but it runs Tiger just fine, and it's a G3/400, and I see no reason why it can't handle Leopard if it can handle Ubuntu.
