i have a trip tomorrow and though i'm a quite an experienced travel, this is the first trip in ages where i will not have a checked bag. i've rounded up the required 3oz size bottles for my carry-on toiletries but in reading the TSA site, they specify zip top bags.
All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed.
i have zipper SEAL sandwich bags in the house, not the fold over kind they specifically disallow. is that good enough or do i really have to run out to walmart at this time of the night for one stupid zipper LOCK bag?

Yes, as long as it's a quart you are fine. It doesn't even have to have a zip or press seal. The bags they give out at the airport are completely open at the top.

the sandwich bags are less than a quart however, are you saying they have a stash of bags at security for people who didn't happen to remember the zip-lock-bag part?

Only a few airports provide bags. The bag just needs to be smaller than a quart/litre. I wouldn't worry about it.

At DIA, they have TSA approved zip-lock bags available as you get to the security area.

they hand them out at SeaTac and SFO FWIW.
They can't say ZipLoc as it is a trademark. All they want is a standard 1 qt zipper-top style bag. Thats what the rules say. 1 qt...... zipper top........ Now they may accept something else at a specific airport at their discretion, because lord knows they make their own rules up to suit themselves.

I wonder if anyone has attempted to board a plane with all their liquids, gels and aerosols EMPTIED into ziploc baggies.

update: the ATL had zip lock top bags available at TSA. and FINALLY, they've put benches in so there's someplace to sit while you put your shoes back on. those weren't there when i flew in April.
also, i traveled airtran but i noticed Delta is now charging $3 a bag for curbside check-in (i first heard $2 a few weeks ago) but curbside check in is complimentary if you check in online.
