What about a trip to the dreaded 24 hr Wal-mart to get some small kritter keepers to put them in? they'll stack nicely in your car.
Announcement, if anyone's curious: Preparing to evac, if necessary...

Steph, yes, I was thinking about that -- no need even to go to Walmart, I could go to Petco tomorrow and just buy a ton of them. The problem becomes food and especially water-- the really small Kritter Keepers don't have space for a water bottle, nor much space for the animal even to move.

can they drink out of anything other than a water bottle? like a shallow dish? If so, we've used jar lids to provide water to snakes in small kritter keepers.
If they can only use a bottle, I can see how that would be problematic

Best to your friends Steph and Peter. Take care of "mom" and your selves. Didn't realize you were neighbors.
This "best to" extends to any other of our forum pals that are in the wake of the storm.

As of 6AM EDT it's moving southwest! The track is still supposed to take it to the Gulf, but...
Anyway, best of luck to you and yours...

Gustav seems to be moving slower than expected - skeetobite is saying it will be Tues now before landfall, and the latest track is west of NO. Lots of time for it to change, as yesterday it looked like a direct hit on NO on Monday
Do the best you can PeterB - stay safe.

Steph and I are not neighbors -- not sure why you got that idea, Sam... she's just trying to give good suggestions on how to take care of my animals.
Yes, I could conceivably get them to drink out of something other than water bottles, though that's what they're used to. It's also possible that if I take breaks during the drive, I could "water" them during the breaks. The big problem is that I cannot leave them in the car for ANY period of time without the AC on-- they will cook inside the car in this kind of weather. (I've had that actually happen already once, without a hurricane!) They seem to handle cold temperatures much better than they do hot. P.S. ... my workplace has announced as of yesterday that we're officially closed starting Friday noon through Wednesday, to reopen Thursday. I think that was a smart move on their part.

Good luck.
