itunes library problem
#1
My itunes library is large enough that I had to split it between two 1tb hard drives. The primary itunes library resides in/Volumes/shows/iTunes/iTunes Music. Inside the folder was a directory called Movies which I moved to /Volumes/Movies/Movies. I then created a symbolic link using the terminal with the result looking like this:

lrwxr-xr-x 1 dave dave 22 Dec 17 06:13 Movies -> /Volumes/Movies/Movies
I compared this to the TV Shows directory and the permissions, owner and group are identical:
drwxr-xr-x 36 dave dave 1224 Dec 4 18:53 TV Shows

Here's the problem. I can playback my movies just fine but I cannot add any movies. It gives me an error message saying "attempting to copy to the disc 'shows' failed. The required folder cannot be found." I'm not sure how to proceed. Obviously it CAN find the folder because it can playback the movies in that folder. I thought maybe it was a permissions issue so I tried saving a document to that directory and it worked with no problems. Any ideas?

Yeah, as long as you point the files to iTunes it can play them back even if they aren't in the library.

But adding is different because you'll recall there's only 1 "iTunes library location" in the prefs.

You may be on the path to a RAID of some sort that will permit you to grow with everything in one place.

Personally, I find iTunes restricting in this way, as well as the inclusion of the video files within the music folder bad db management.

Ok, now this is weird. Normally I add video files to itunes by dragging the files icon onto the itunes icon in the taskbar. This now doesn't work. But if I use the "add to itunes" option under the file menu it works great.

I did the big update for osx last night, I don't remember if there was an itunes update. Can anyone else drag media onto the itunes icon to add it to the library?

I'm on itunes 8.0.2

Yes, raid was the way I SHOULD have gone. At the beginning of the project I should have calculated how much storage I would need and realized that the 1tb drive I bought was not going to be adequate. So unfortunately I have two 1tb external drives that have only a single usb2 interface (one was the original drive, one was for the backup) and a 1tb fireware/usb drive that I just bought from owc. So I've bought three 1tb external drives but I'm told I really could not create a reliable raid with them. I should have bought a single box that could have held three drives as a raid. Live and learn.

I tried the same thing...and got the same result. Apparently iTunes will not be tricked.
