How to repair permissions in Ubuntu?

I still haven't put OSX on my Dell Mini 9 and am running it with Ubuntu 8.0.4. Since underneath Ubuntu and OSX are versions of Unix, I would expect the same housekeeping should be done. After installing the latest version of Adobe Flash Player (see earlier post) on my Mac I repaired permissions and it gave a long list of permissions repaired. I assume the same thing should be done with Linux but I don't know how. Does anyone here know how to do that?

No, "repair permissions" is only a Mac OS X thing. There is no corresponding Linux housekeeping task.

OS X keeps records of file and folder permissions set by Apple installers. To the best of my knowledge, there is no similar record-keeping feature in Ubuntu.

Underneath Ubuntu is Linux. It is similar to UNIX, but definitely different. Many of the same tools are used for both though.
