Unlike previous upgrade options, you get to keep lifetime on your current unit too (previous offers transferred the lifetime and gave you a free year of service on the old unit).

If you don't have lifetime, but still have an active TiVo, they appear to be offering 20% off the hardware, but this offer deactivates the old TiVo unless you sign up for a new plan for the old TiVo.

I don't get it - Besides an interface facelift, what additional functionality does the Premiere provide over my existing Tivo HD ??

I've already got lifetime on mine and I've upgraded the drive to 1 TB.

I don't see the compelling new functionality to fork over another $500 + $200 lifetime transfer.

I suppose I can ebay my existing unit for probably $450, making it a $250 net upgrade cost, but why?

Don't know what it does for Tivo HD owners, but it's not a transfer of the lifetime service. Your Tivo HD would still retain it's lifetime service.

I think the offer is more attractive to people like me who bought a Series 2 like 7 or 8 years ago (it's been so long, I don't even remember!!).

There really isn't any compelling reason for HD owners to upgrade to the Premiere. I'm only going to upgrade b/c I have an HD that is going out of contract in a couple weeks. I was going to buy lifetime for it anyway, and this way I can at least get the latest hardware without that much additional out of cost expense after selling the HD.

I don't think the deal is exactly the way Newton wrote it - I don't believe the high end model Includes lifetime (or maybe I misread her comment).

I just signed up for the low ball model (I'll upgrade the HDD later - or not). Funny thing about the Lifetime deal. Unless I'm getting shafted by a sales person who's either dumber or smarter than me, I got a better deal than I expected.

I have a Series 2 - dual tuner that I was going to replace with the Premiere. Also have a TiVoHD with lifetime. I figured I'd cancel the contract on the Series 2 and buy lifetime on the Premiere, at the discounted multi-Tivo price of $299 giving me both with lifetime. The salesman said to just cancel the Series 2 and upgrade the TiVoHD to the Premiere adding Lifetime at $199 - AND the TiVoHD will retain lifetime as well - according to the rep, one unit must have un-discounted service - not sure which one they are figuring has that on my deal.

Somehow, that seems like pulling yourself up by your bootstraps but the rep insisted that way I'd spend less and have lifetime on both units. (I didn't get the 20% discount on the Premiere that I would have got by upgrading the Series 2 but saved $200 over the regular priced lifetime service.)

Well, OK, works for me if it all passes muster. I’ll have 15 or 30 days to back out if things go haywire, so I'll see if the deal flies.

I'll probably skip the cable card and just record OTA stuff on the new one since I can move content between them anyway.

Yup, that was the way to go. You paid $500 instead of $540. In my case, since I plan to go with a Premiere XL, I'll save a whopping $10 on tax (since they charge tax on the hardware, but not the service) by upgrading a monthly unit that I don't need to keep active, as opposed to getting lifetime at $199 using one of my lifetime units.

(especially when there is no add'l charge from provider for dvr usage?)

I can't help but think that "lifetime" really won't be all that long the way things are changing in terms of how we get our "content".

It may still be a good deal even if it only is used for 5 years or so, but "lifetime" makes you think like 20 or 30 years, and I can't help but assume Tivo and that method of consuming media content will be history long before then.
