Why can't Apple design products that look this good?

Looks good ? IMHO, that looks like a techno-fetishist piece of crap. The obsession with knobs and buttons is a direct violation of the Apple Human Design Guidelines !

Having done human engineering work, designed weapons systems controls for vehicles and aircraft, I've always loved the brevity of design that is the Apple human interface. And I've always hated excessively busy designs.

OK, I'm off my soap box. I'll also admit to having an atavistic attraction to knobs and buttons, not to mention old school mainframes with the whickering tape drives and the air-hockey table floors, but I hate the complexity when I have to use them.

My new Panasonic microwave has a knob for the time setting. Very retro, and I love it. Even has micro detents for a nice feel.

cbelt3, your irony meter failed to activate! The design inspiration depicted above is the most gawd-awful looking piece of junk, a truly horrifying example of bad industrial design. But in this case, it's so bad, it's inspiring and funny. If you thought it was meant as an example of good design, I'd have to think your irony module wasn't plugged in right.
