Keyword-searchable web-based image catalog software?
#1
Does anyone know of any software which will create an image catalog for web viewing where the viewer can do keyword searches of the images in the catalog?

Adobe Bridge will "catalog" images with their keywords, but all of its output options (Flash, HTML etc.) leave the keyword search capability behind.

I've also got iView/ExpressionMedia, but it also leaves its keyword search capability behind when it creates an HTML gallery.

I need to make image libraries available to coworkers at other sites AND give them the option of doing keyword searches rather than leaving them no alternative other than going through each catalog visually, screen by screen.

I know that there are commercial products like Extensis Portfolio which have this capability, but their Web-capable versions are quite expensive and appear to be overkill for our needs (I need to make the catalogs available to about a dozen people, not hundreds.)

What's your budget?

$200 for Portfolio Server sounds pretty reasonable to me. It's ideal for small workgroups. And it does what you're asking for.

30-day demo to try before you buy.

Where are you seeing the current version of Portfolio "Server" for $200??

I see version 8.5 "single user" for $195,

but the server versions appear to be MUCH more expensive; about $6,000 for the app plus $100 for "clients" plus an annual "service agreement."

portfolio server is the best one I've seen (tried the demo a version or two back), but we couldn't justify the expense for our small office.

also, here's a great resource. I haven't read the book, but the forums were good back when I was researching this.

Sorry. You're right.

I did a froogle search for Portfolio Server and didn't pay close attention to the result.

'Looks like the cheapest solution from them is Portfolio ($200) plus NetPublish ($460).

Couldn't you do this with Filemaker?

I don't know if this will do it or not, but it's free and worth a try: Picasa along with Picasa Web Albums

If you or someone in your organization are inclined to dive into php, MySQL and Apache, this is free as in beer, and open as in source:

But depends how much your time is worth.

Also, keep in mind that data entry is of paramount importance.
I see a lot of projects get bogged down by lower-cost labor mucking up the spellings of things or just lack of attention to detail by the people tasked with the drudgery of keeping these things up to date.

Like the CDDB. Just painful to deal with much of the time.
