I bought one a while back for $20 cheaper and it works just fine for me. It was initially hard to get the IP address though to be able to set it up, but this was my first experience with a NAS.

because I've had too many bad experiences with their equipment, granted I haven't bought any in years, so it's possible it could be time to try them again.

I have the D-Link DNS-323. It's worked well for me for the last couple of years, but it's not what I would call Mac-friendly.

Just set one of these up for work the other week.
It comes with a default IP address, which is in the documentation. Browse to it for easy browser-based set-up. Change the IP if you like.

Kinda boring, really.

Apparently, there's a newer hardware version which fixes a few bugs and adds a feature or two. Both versions are still sold as new, and there's no way to tell which one you have. Recent deals may be an effort to clear the older stock. I got mine from newegg last month, and it was the older version. Not a big deal to me, but may be to you.

Clarifying: You can tell which version once you have it in hand, but there's no way to know from the item description on a website.
