I just recently began sleeping on a new 3-inch memory foam mattress topper, and now I wake up with my elbows stiff and aching. I've never had any elbow issues before, and I'm trying to figure out how this could be related. As far as I can tell, I don't move much during the night: I wake up in pretty much the same position as I fell asleep.

Well, the problem definitely relates to the mechanics of the situation. When you lie down, think about how your elbows are held, how that has changed now that your body sinks farther into the bed, and how the stress on your elbows is impacted. It may be that your elbow is actually sinking farther than it used to, and this has affected how your weight is distributed.
It's strictly a physics exercise. Good luck ! I've found that I have to sleep in a different position on the memory foam topper than if I sleep on the daybed in the sitting room (Those nights when Mrs, cbelt3 is in too much pain to have a bed partner that weighs more than a Chihauhua).

I prop my elbow on a small pillow on my memory foam bed. It relieves just what you describe.

Do you have them bent for any period of time?

Assuming that you sleep on your back when this occurs, does it also occur if you sleep on your side?
So far my only complaint about our memory foam topper is how much warmer I feel (which is something that my always-cold wife loves). I seem to sweat a lot at night since we got it, and now only sleep with the top sheet on me. Maybe it'll be better this winter.
