More foggy rumors about Light Peak
#1
http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/...ight.peak/

"It would regardless line up with rumors that some companies, particularly Apple and Sony, have been pushing for an early Light Peak release beyond the current 2012 target. Apple isn't directly involved but is known to have provided recommendations for Light Peak that likely shaped its creation. At a minimum, Light Peak will simplify the internal connections by letting FireWire, Ethernet, USB and other external formats share a single pipe."

I hope I hope I hope. :turbo:

Of course this will come out at the same time as http://www.hdbaset.com/ which will be totally incompatible with LightPeak and largely confusing to consumers thus hurting both industries.

I guess this puts an end to the rumors that the early 2011 MacBook Pro will have Light Peak. Show me a bus powered Light Peak external case with slots for eight 2.5" SSD's in RAID 0 for under $400 and I might become a supporter.

Apple will make Light Peak-to-HDBaseT adapters!

But HDBaseT: "HDBaseT Alliance was formed to promote and commercialize the HDBaseT™ technology, enabling a single LAN cable to replace multiple cables and connectors in the home entertainment environment, HDBaseT is optimized for video application and can connect all the entertainment devices at home by providing the 5Play convergence of uncompressed full HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, power over cable and various control signals."

100BaseT Ethernet? Really??! Meaning not gigabit Ethernet?

Well if your carrier is a single gigabit Cat6 cable you can only guarantee so much bandwidth within that for the Ethernet protocol.

It looks like Light Peak and HDBaseT have very different priorities. Light Peak supercedes stuff like Firewire and USB for general-purpose computers using external devices (storage, etc.) and likely includes full-speed networking, whereas HDBaseT aims to simplify home theater environments and the devices that live within in. Anything that reduces cable clutter is a good thing.

I remember the same kind of speculation and anticipation before firewire came out.
