I've been self-employed for a looonnnnngggg time, and very recently decided to become more formal about my work status by registering a business name with my state, getting a federal EIN, a business checking account and credit card, etc. Next step: register a domain name (s) for a website which I will soon design for this business.
I'm wondering about top-level domain name options, e.g. .com, .org., .net, .me, etc.
Is it ridiculous to spend the money for registering my business name with all these top-level domain names appended to it, or is .com sufficient? I'm not worrying about protecting trademarks. Also, I'm puzzling over all these domain registry options that I am not familiar with. For example, looking at GoDaddy, I see add-on options like Private Registration, Business Registration, Deluxe Registration, Certified Domain, etc. etc. The list of options is bewildering, and I don't want to piss away money on "enhancements" of dubious value.
Does anyone have any keen insights about the issues of domain registry I'm describing? Any recommendations about who to register the domain with?

just get the address that you want to use. i'd avoid godaddy because their commercials are so annoying but then again, i use them.
i'd turn down pretty much any "extra". they might as well be offering your domain in needle point form.

Yes, their commercials are annoying, but do have a bit of entertainment value. Thanks for your input, Matt. If not GoDaddy, then who else??

if you go with dreamhost, which I recommend, you get a free domain name.

The only good private registration will do you is keep your ownership private - which is dumb if the website will say who and where you are, so don't pay for that.
The only reason I'd consider a .net or .biz or .info to go along with it is if you think you'll need either a backup
on a different host (in case 1 host went down) or you were going to maintain FTP or whatever else you
might need, and it might get moved around, and at least that would allow one steady domain as Optimus Prime.
I haven't seen what "Daddy" has been offering lately - but I read a good story about an inside job at GoDaddy
trying to steal his domain! This is a syndicated cartoonist - I'll send you the tale as soon as I find it. I just
read it the other day - I was shocked, actually.
I wish Network Solutions had "deals" - but wherever you go, you'll do yourself a favor keeping them all at
one registrar. Here is the list of true registrars: http://www.internic.net/alpha.html
Here is the GoDaddy attempt to hijack the domain. http://cnx.com/?p=1384
This is the cartoon of the domain owner (available on GoComics.com)

Remember -- that most sellers out there are just reselling - so you might be with GoDaddy even if
you didn't want to be! So go with a verifiable ICANN registrar - not a reseller.

skip all that crap, just get a .com
search around -- godaddy always has $1 new domain sales.
How are you building your web site?

Not sure. I'm not a web designer, but I've done lots of work with web designers. Might use RapidWeaver or iWeb or even WordPress, just for a simple first round, that can be updated as needed. I have Dreamweaver CS5 too FWIW, as part of my CS5 Design Premium license. I need to plan it out and gather the content together, which will be mostly images. I might enlist a designer friend or two for guidance. I would consider Flash too, but I'd want it to work with Safari on an iPad too. Might also try Sitegrinder, since my work involves a huge amount of Photoshop. http://www.medialab.com/
