what about linkedin.com?
#1
I am not a facebook/tweeter guy.

I heard that linked in is like facebook, some say it's even worse. At the dentist office a few weeks ago I read a brief article that says linkedin is the place to be if you want to land a ne job. I keep receiving invitations from former co-workers (who left the company) and also from other supplierr to join their linkedin network.

pro? cons?

Should I use my work email, or private email?

i don't know for certain about landing a job, but it's a good place for business networking.

i know at least one recruiter who posts jobs there.

I joined LinkedIn. I used my work email because it really is all about my job as far as I am concerned. On the plus side nobody is using it for anything but networking as far as I can see. In my experience it is totally professional. On the minus side, due to the nature of my job everybody and their uncle wants to link in with me, and it's getting old.

:agree:

Linkedin is definitely for professional networking exclusively. My full work history is on my profile there.

I just signed up. Many of my previous coworkers are on there and I didn't want to lose those contacts.

I signed up a couple of years ago, but it seems to have "gone viral" in the last quarter. Every day now I have a "join my network" request from someone whose name I don't recognize.

I'm still trying to figure out how one would use it for business networking or job hunting.

I have personal stuff on facebook and work stuff on linkedin.

I'm on it and have re-connected with some former coworkers.

I haven't seen any value yet from a job hunting perspective. I'm linked to a couple of recruiters, haven't received any leads from them as a result. I don't pay for the "upgraded" version, so I don't have any way to determine if HR or hiring managers are looking me up on LinkedIn after I send in a resume.

You need a web presence to fulfill the needs of the nosy people poking through your personal life when you're up for a new job. If you have no detectable online life they'll either dismiss you offhand or dig harder for something juicy.

Linkedin provides a fairly sterile place to put some random cr@p on for those people to find and satisfy themselves. Something nice and boring so they don't bother paying the $5 bucks for a real background check that might turn up those "private" photos from college...

I've been on linked in for a while but I don't like the interface and it doesn't seem very useful to me. I joined the linked in versions of a couple of my regular professional societies which seems to have done nothing but result in a lot of emails from people looking for jobs. Most of them are junior level and many of them are from other countries. Some of that stuff looks like spam. So far I've been totally unimpressed with linked in.
