The 8 track thing is over my head. Looks more like a cassette interface, may be they don't know the difference?

My players you just pushed on the tape case/shell itself to change tracks.
I am betting that it might have varied between makers.
Perhaps shaking is akin to this, then.

The white thing with the peeling label on the interface is what an 8-track inserted into a player looks like. I have fond memories of pulling eaten Moody Blues tapes out of my old 8-track.
