"You just destroyed my window, officer"

You are damn sure I did. Just watch these jerks. You can just hear it in their voices. We are hispanics and we dare you lay a finger on us. I practically broke into applause when police finally acted. Start at minute 3. Curious what you think.

Possible translations:

"Curious what you think but only if you agree with me."

"Curious what you think where what you think equals how mad this will make you."

"Curious what you think so I can accuse you of 'playing the race card' despite the fact that I brought ethnicity up first."

Interesting video, Dakota. I didn't really hear what you did about ethnicity; to me, it seemed more like two young anti-authoritarian guys pressing their luck with cops. It seems clear they intended to be difficult, which though not illegal, is generally unwise when dealing with the police. I think the cops handled themselves pretty well; it must be frustrating to deal with insubordination like that, especially from youngsters. Checkpoints have been ruled constitutional several times, and when a police officer in California asks you to identify yourself, by law you must do so. Since when driving a car you must have a license, police can require a driver to produce a valid license at a checkpoint. It seems unlikely to me that these two guys would have opened the door for the police voluntarily, so i don't think it's reprehensible that they broke the window.

It's really best to know the law, and if you decide to break it, to be prepared to deal with the consequences.

rj, it might be true that two young white punks could have also behaved this way but we have seen too many cops hauled to court because somebody shot a video of them doing their job and the other side happened to be a minority (so am I, whatever "minority" means these days).

stu, in the post binLaden era, I thought you too have become a law and order guy. Alas, it didn't even last a week.

I suppose this is always a possibility, i just didn't see any indication from the video or the newspaper article that ethnicity has been raised by any of the parties as an issue.

California cops get around $150 for every car they impound during sobriety checks, or more if the car is auctioned, which many are. Two thirds of these impounded cars belong to illegal aliens, most of whom are sober when stopped.

"Sobriety checkpoints," which are often federally funded, are a great income source in California, where in 2010 they impounded over 17,500 cars, six times more than the number of DUI's resulting from the checkpoints.

So the cops know to set them up in areas where they are most likely to stop illegals. Works great. Fish in a barrel.

So you can understand why emotions at "sobriety checkpoints" might be running a little high in California.

Don't want to put you on the spot but since you brought it up. Read Grace's post above and see if you don't hear excuses for their race. I know who I am talking to here.

Now, now, Dakota - that doesn't add anything to the evidence we have on this case. It does show that you really know your audience, though. Wink

Also, i know better than to comment on someone's post at the request of a non-poster. So far, of everything that's been said here, i'm not convinced that ethnicity was salient in this story. And i'm going to keep my commentary on that particular event for now. I might be rattled off my footing later in the thread, though - "Pobody's Nerfect!" (Big Grin
