Pricing & Availability Mac OS X Lion will be available in July as an upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow LeopardĀ® from the Mac App Store for $29.99 (US). Lion will be the easiest OS X upgrade and at about 4GB, it is the size of an HD movie from the iTunes StoreĀ®. Mac OS X Lion Server requires Lion and will be available in July from the Mac App Store for $49.99 (US).

Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM. The Lion upgrade can be installed on all your authorized personal Macs.

In other words, Lion requires a 64 bit capable CPU. Not a total surprise, that's why I waited for Core2 Duo before upgrading hardware from PowerPC to x86. I only wished that Apple had waited those extra few months and never shipped the original Core Duo processors.

Not all C2D Macs are 64 bit capable.

Could you name one that is not capable of running 64 bit apps? All Core2 Duo CPUs support the 64 bit instruction set.

GGD's correct. It's that not all Intel Macs are 64-bit.

I posted this on another thread, but I thought it fits here as well:

It seems very timely that HBO was showing "The Ghost and the Darkness" last night and I couldn't turn my TV off. Got to sleep around 5 AM. I had forgotten what a gripping (based on a true event) story that was.

Enjoyed that one a lot -- well worth a viewing if you've never seen it.
